The Library Association of Ireland Cataloguing and Metadata Group (LAICMG) is a section of the Library Association of Ireland and was established in accordance with Articles 83 – 87 of the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the Library Association of Ireland. The LAICMG is committed to promoting awareness of and expertise in all aspects of library resource description including relevant metadata schema, standards and technologies.
Aims and Objectives:
- To promote the importance of resource description to the broader library community and to facilitate professional development in this field.
- To provide a forum for librarians and information professionals working in the field of cataloguing and metadata in Ireland.
- To advocate the role and value of cataloguing and metadata in the wider library and information community.
- To advise the Library Association of Ireland on any matters relevant to the Group’s fields of interest.
- To encourage the provision of education, training and continuing professional development by means of suitable courses, workshops, seminars and visits organised by the Group.
The LAICMG endeavours to support the work of the Library Association of Ireland in promoting and developing high standards of librarianship and information services in Ireland, including the organising of cataloguing-related training events, seminars, workshops and visits. The LAICMG offers financial support to enable our members to engage with the wider community of metadata and information professionals in the form of the LAICMG bursary.
The Cataloguing and Metadata Group of the LAI will offer a bursary of up to €500 to encourage librarians at any career stage, including students and those not currently in the paid workforce, to attend conferences on the themes of cataloguing, metadata, or the broader topic of information organisation. Applicants must be current members of the Library Association of Ireland. Details of the bursary will be advertised via the LAICMG mailing list on libraryassociation.ie, on our blog at laicmg.wordpress.com

Cataloguing & Metadata Group Rules and Procedures

“To ask why we need libraries at all, when there is so much information available elsewhere, is about as sensible as asking if roadmaps are necessary now that there are so very many roads.”
Jon Bing (1944-2014. Norwegian writer and law professor at the Norwegian Research Center for Computers and Law)
